At the beginning of January, the government announced its latest dietary guidelines. Limit sugar intake to 10 teaspoon a day, fat to less than 10% of your daily calorie, and coffee is now good for you as it decreases diabetics and cardio vascular disease.
Whole fruits, vegetables and grains, at least half of which are whole grains, still get high marks in the entire guidelines. [All is good].
Getting the recommended amount of omega 3 in your diet can be a challenge, as well as healthy protein and fiber.
Every morning I start my day with this heart-healthy breakfast packed with essential fatty acids, fiber, multiple vitamins and protein: a simple fruit smoothie made with Greek yogurt and coconut milk.
Simple Fruit Smoothie:
- 2 fruits of your choice. I usually use a banana in winter + another fruit in season (Apple, Pear, Kiwi, Mango, Pineapple). In the summer a use Raspberry, Strawberry, Blackberry, Blueberry. You get the gist, I hope.
- 1 tablespoon of whole ground flaxseed.
- 3 oz. of Greek yogurt.
- 1 cup of unsweetened coconut milk.
